1 cup rolled oats (livestock quality or Quaker old fasion Oats) 2 cups wheat bran 1 cup ground flaxseed (they have this a wal-mart) 3 large carrots 1/2 cup molasses 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup apple sauce (or 1 blended large apple) Optional I like to add powder equine vitamins and MSM Mix molasses, brown sugar, carrots and applesauce in one bowl. In another bowl mix the dry ingredients. Combine the molasses mixture with the dry ingredients. Add only enough molasses mixture to form a thick dough, add more bran if necessary. Line cookie sheet with foil. Drop batter onto foil with a tablespoon and flatten slightly to form portions about the size of a average candy bar. Bake at 300 degrees for one (1) hour. flip and bake an additional 40 minutes until they are dried out. Checking them often so they do not burn.

To Treat Or Not To Treat? That is a good
question. All horses have different personalities. Its
best to see if your horse can handle treats
respectfully. If your horse acts disrespectful when
you bring out the treats it is because someone let
that behavior exist. It is possible to teach your
horse not to be nippy, patients and to appreciate
his treat. Look for more on that soon on my weekly
training tips.
Now the real question is, how does the treat affect
his energy? That can not be helped. If your horse
does not tolerate sweets well, than sweet treats
should be out. I have a Thoroughbred mare that
can only have a sweet treat when she is in heavy
work. Her energy is then used for work and she has
room for a treat or two. I can not give her treats
when she is stalled and resting day after day. Even
the small amount of sugar can make a difference in
her energy. I only wish I had this problem!
I have made a few recipes with little of no sugar
except the natural sugar from apple and carrot,
which does not seem to affect the horses much.
So learn from trial and error and take note on your
horses energy levels.
Not only are your treats a great reward but can
be a healthy tidbit. I like to make my treats from
scratch so I can use all natural ingriedents and use
the opportunity to put in important vitamins,
minerals and herbs.
